Experience Mudumu National Park

Proclaimed in 1990, Mudumu National Park protects a pristine riverine ecosystem in the heart of the Caprivi Strip. Like its neighbor Bwabwata, it acts as a critical, unfenced migratory corridor for large mammals moving between Botswana, Namibia, Angola, and Zambia. The park is highly distinct from the rest of Namibia due to its flat, water-rich terrain, dominated by the tranquil flowing channels and seasonal floodplains of the Kwando River. Mudumu provides an authentic, raw, and uncommercialized wilderness experience, appealing to seasoned safari travelers who enjoy navigating deep sandy tracks and viewing wildlife in a completely natural, low-density environment.

Travel Requirements

Passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months past your intended entry date with 2 blank pages.
Visa: Follows standard Namibian entry rules (most Western, European, and SADC travelers are visa-exempt for holiday stays up to 90 days).
Health: Mudumu is located in a high-risk Malaria zone. Year-round prophylaxis, high-strength mosquito repellent, and sleeping under nets are strongly advised.
Vehicle Requirements: A high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is strictly mandatory to enter the park due to deep, soft sand tracks and potential floodplain crossings. Single vehicles are discouraged due to the remote nature of the terrain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there designated campsites inside Mudumu National Park?
Yes, there are basic, un-demarcated wilderness campsites inside the park managed by the ministry, which offer very limited or no facilities (self-sufficiency is required). For more comfort, excellent private lodges and community-run campsites are located right on the park boundaries along the Kwando River.
Can I visit the park as a day trip?
Yes, if you are staying at a nearby lodge along the Kwando River, you can easily explore the park on a day-trip game drive, provided you have a high-clearance 4x4 and proper navigation tools.
Is the park fenced?
No. Like most parks in the Zambezi Region, Mudumu is completely unfenced to allow the historic, natural migration of wildlife across international borders between Namibia and Botswana.
